US-Iran 60-day ceasefire memorandum expires without a final deal

A ceasefire memorandum of understanding signed by the United States and Iran in June, which called for a final deal within 60 days, expired on August 17 (local time, Monday) with the two sides still unable to agree on managing the Strait of Hormuz or on Iran's frozen funds. The original memorandum called for an immediate ceasefire, the lifting of the US naval blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, partial sanctions relief for Iran, at least $300 billion in reconstruction and economic-development funding for Iran, and an Iranian pledge never to pursue nuclear weapons. The White House said it is not seeking to extend the memorandum; Iran's Foreign Ministry said Tehran would adopt a "fully offensive" military posture, citing repeated US violations of the agreement's terms. As of this writing, neither side has formally announced withdrawing from the memorandum or resuming full-scale military action.

Verification note: Compiled from multiple international news and financial outlets; both sides' official positions are conveyed as stated. The situation is still developing; this site does not take a position on the underlying dispute. Check official statements and wire-service reporting for the latest.
